Table for two....

It's the first day of February and that means that Valentine's Day is just around the corner!

I have to admit, I haven't always been the biggest fan of the holiday. In fact, I've even had some Valentine's horror stories. Cue 17 year old me finding out I was rejected from my first choice college ON valentines day and eating an entire "death by chocolate" trifle alone while sobbing. (Side note- People always say "things happen for a reason" when you face a blow like this and it  sounds sucky when you're wallowing but it is TOTALLY true. I ended up going to an amazing school I absolutely loved. I even moved back to my college town last year. Go Stags!)

As I progressed into adulthood, Valentines Day became more of an afterthought. I worked in the Fashion industry, and Valentines always fell smack in the middle of New York Fashion Week and market. I was usually so busy that I hardly gave any thought to it. My husband and I finally started our own little tradition of having a mini date at the original Shake Shack late in the evening once I was done with work and shows. Looking back, there was something very romantic about hanging out under the stars on a chilly night and splitting a burger and fries.

Now we're starting new traditions.  I absolutely love going out to eat, but on Valentine's day in particular I much prefer a quiet dinner at home. This year, I'm setting up a fun and eclectic table for two in our sunroom. I like to mix our wedding china with some more casual elements, add some fresh flowers, some candles and voila - the perfect date at home.

Below is the full slideshow of my set up, as well as my checklist for a great date night at home.

Date Night Must Haves

-Great Music I usually let me husband handle this, and he doesn't disappoint

-Candles Let's face it, we're all a little bit more attractive in soft lighting

-Roaring Fire Some cliches exist for a reason

-Fresh Flowers They help pull together any table

-Simple, Yet Elegant Menu I tend to trust anything Ina Garten makes

-Great Wine My go to is a Russian River Pinot Noir. It's almost always a crowd pleaser, even if your crowd is just two people

I love eatting in the sunroom. It gets tons of light during the day, but in the evenings if you keep the lights low you can look out onto the stars.

I like mixing our wedding china with more eclectic pieces. I specifically chose this china because it is stamped with an abstract KS at the top and I thought it was a good sign to have my initials!

Fresh flowers don't need to be fussy. I'm not one for red roses, but I'll take potted springtime flowers any day! Also, I like to set the arrangements further back on the table so that you can actually see and talk with the other person.

I'd love to hear about your Valentine's Day trials and tribulations. How are you planning to celebrate this year?
